It limits Windows’ ability to hoard restore points and shadow copies, preventing the folder from getting out of control. When? If you notice your disk filling up fast or the folder size indicator is enormous. Expect? A smaller, more manageable folder. On some machines, this setting isn’t perfect — it might require a reboot or two before the changes kick in.

Method 2: Run Disk Cleanup to Shrink Backups

This old favorite can clean out shadow copies, old system restore points, and other hidden junk stored in that folder. Sometimes, Windows just keeps a backlog of shadow copies, and you can wipe some of that out safely. Yes, you might lose a few recovery points, but if space is tight — worth it.

Press <kbd>Windows key + R</kbd> to open the Run dialog.

Type
C:\\windows\\SYSTEM32\\cleanmgr.exe
and hit <kbd>Enter</kbd>. This kicks off Disk Cleanup — no fuss, no extra apps needed.

Select the system drive, usually
C:
, then click OK.

In the Disk Cleanup window, click on Cleanup system files. The dialog will reopen asking for the drive again.

After it scans, you’ll see a few extra options. Navigate to the More options tab.

Under System Restore and Shadow Copies, click Cleanup. This clears out old shadow copies and restore points that are no longer needed — freeing space in the folder.
